According to UNICEF, 80% of grade 4 learners cannot read for comprehension. My aim of the social action project was to improve literacy skills. Upon arrival at the school in the second block, the project was implemented. Learners were eager to attend the library and read. Learners read a variety of books which targeted varying skill ranges. Within the intermediate phase, all grades were given a chance. The learners were constantly assessed to see their improvement in reading skills by giving them journaling tasks and others which required their reading skills to be used. The school appreciated the initiative as the library was not in use and it was a constructive use of the space. Apart from that, grade 7 learners loved the initiative so much that they wanted to use the library as a research centre.

I have gained an understanding of learners and the struggles they endure within schools. Many of the learners do not have essential skills such as reading which impacts their ability in other subjects. This has increased my passion for teaching and given me an increased understanding of the importance of my job. I have become much more grateful for the opportunity to educate and enhance lives.

This initiative has given me increased understanding and empathy for learners and their various needs and struggles. I have learnt how to communicate and lead learners to ensure the success of the initiative. It has given me an increased love for literacy and has opened my eyes to the true importance of reading skills. It was fulfilling to see learners grow and develop.

The initiative benefitted the school as learners use the library to gain literacy skills. During their turn, they’re able to enhance their skills. The grade 7 learners use the library as a research centre to complete assignments and tasks. The library is still in use and will continue to stay open for the English lessons. After schools, learners can use the library to complete their homework and rea as they remain in the school for after care until they’re picked up.

Overall I feel as though this initiative was a success. I have enjoyed helping the learners read and gain an understanding of literacy. It has deepened my love for my job.

I think your project on improving literacy skills is incredible, especially with such a big need for reading comprehension support in grade 4, as highlighted by UNICEF. It’s inspiring to see how eager the learners were to participate and use the library. The variety of books catering to different skill levels really shows that you put thought into ensuring all learners had something to engage with. I also love that the initiative had such a positive response from the grade 7 learners, who wanted to use the library as a research center — that’s a sign of real impact!

Your reflection on understanding the struggles learners face with basic skills like reading is both insightful and touching. It’s clear this…

Your blog post shows how successful your literacy project was and how much it meant to you and the school. It’s clear that your goal was to help improve reading skills, and you did just that by creating a space for learners to enjoy reading in the library. The fact that learners were eager to attend, and that even the Grade 7s wanted to use the library as a research center, shows how well the project was received.

You also shared how this experience helped you understand the struggles that learners face, especially when they don’t have strong reading skills. It’s great to hear how this has deepened your passion for teaching and made you more grateful for the role…

Your initiative is a great idea especially considering the statistics regarding the literacy levels of South African learners. From this post I believe your initiative has raised awareness about the importance of reading and it is foundational for a learners' academic and overall development. Your ideas also show that you really assimilated yourself in the schools culture ad community and realized their struggles such as the library not being in use as often as it should be - and you decided to make a difference in the school. Maybe when you are deciding to do thus project again in the future I would suggest having like a fun 'Reading Bingo challenge' and maybe encourage the grade 7s to possibly read…

Thank you for such a reflective presentation on your social action project. Indeed, congratulations are in order as to how your intervention has breathed life not only into the library space but also effectively influenced the literacy skills and reading interest of the learners. Your commitment to engaging in and then working toward monitoring and guiding students through different skill levels displays a commitment to each one's personal development. That's wonderful to hear-how the library has become dear to the students and was even converted into a research center for the grade 7 learners. Your experience shows the huge difference enthusiastic teachers bring into the lives of learners. Continue doing the great job-your efforts are making a difference.
